Methionine Adenosy ltransferase, Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase A, Thioredoxin and Oxidative Stress in Patients with Hypothyroidism

Section: Article

Abstract

This study included a study of methionine adenosyl transferase (MAT) levels and some enzymatic and non-enzymatic biochemical variables in patients with hypothyroidism. The enzymatic variables included Methionine sulfoxide reductase A(MsrA), Thioredoxin(Trx), catalase (CAT), Myeloperoxidase, Lactoperoxidase, Xanthine oxidase  (XO), Glutathione S-Transferase(GST), and senescence marker protein-30 (SMP-30). The non-enzymatic variables included: Glutathione (GSH), Uric acid(UA), Albumin (Alb), Malondialdehyde (MDA), and Peroxynitrite (ONOO-). The study was conducted in Mosul, and included 90 blood serum samples from patients with hypothyroidism, and 50 samples collected as a control group. The results, when comparing hypothyroid patients with healthy controls, indicated a significant (p≤0.05) increase in enzyme variables (MAT, CAT, XO, and GST), and a significant decrease in SMP-30. There was also a significant increase in the levels of the non-enzymatic antioxidant MDA and a decrease in Alb. However, no significant differences were observed in the remaining variables. A significant direct relationship was observed between MAT and the enzymes SMP-30, MPO, MsrA, MDA, UA, ONOO- and Alb. There was an inverse relationship with CAT, XO, and GSH, while there was no relationship between MAT and enzymes: GST, LP, and Trx.Overall, the study concluded that there is a relationship between MAT activity and oxidative stress in hypothyroid patients, as well as metabolic imbalance and cellular defenses.
